Teleology: The Science of Becoming

An invitation to the depth that brevity cannot reach - Video coming soon.

TL;DR:

  • The algorithm wants you to scroll past this. Way out
  • If this feels too long to read, that is exactly why you might want to read it slowly.
  • Purpose is the 'gravity' of the soul. Find out why.
Teleology is the study of ends, goals, and the underlying causes that drive the cosmic dance.

In the Standard Worldview, the answer to "Why are we here?" is "by chance."
In the Sacred Geometry Worldview, the answer is "on purpose."

Is Purpose Exceedingly Rare or Literally Everywhere?

The standard worldview suggests that purpose is a rare byproduct of complex brains. I say that is nonsense, the hills are alive with myriad purposes. Let us briefly compare these two stances on teleology.

Purpose in the Academy Model

By virtue of consciousness being the absolute ground of being, all minds which modulate awareness naturally have their own purposes, aims, goals, and reasons appropriate to themselves. Purpose arises in every sub-mind's relationship to awareness and to other minds in its own quest to try to comprehend its identity and experience.
Far from being a rare, possibly illusory phenomenon, purpose is embedded at every relative level of the intelligible, visible, and invisible domains in every mind and dissociative submind. Minds inherently all have purposes appropriate to themselves in their interrelationship with the whole.

Purpose in the Standard Model

Only certain animal lifeforms have purpose, the ones which are conscious. Humans have aims, goals, designs, and explanations for some of the things that they do, while many processes are limbic or autonomic. Animals seem to share in having instictual purposes, but we tend to draw the line at a lower threshold of nervous complexity which can possibly support any form of intelligence. Perhaps a flatworm with a ganglion for a brain or a shrimp might be the lower limit on consciousness, but the line is unclear. Plants, fungi, protists, bacteria, viruses, and single-celled organisms do not have purposes because they do not have brains, therefore it follows these types of life are unconscious and without purposes.
A four-quadrant infographic titled "Membranes" illustrating the rarity of purpose in the universe. Each panel features a thin yellow boundary highlighting a specific zone: the Galactic Habitable Zone within a spiral galaxy; the Circumstellar Habitable Zone around the Sun; the thin Habitable Biosphere surrounding Earth; and the 2-3mm thick Cerebral Cortex of the human brain associated with conscious thought. The image visualizes how purpose is physically constrained within these nested, fragile layers of the cosmos.
Standard model's thin membranes of consciousness and possible teleology make it exceedingly rare in the universe.
Purpose is constrained within 2-3 mm of human neocortex, Earth's habitable biosphere, the Sun's circumstellar habitable zone,
and finally the galactic habitable zone. A filmy membrane riding on a membrane, all the way up.

In my view, purpose is everywhere because when consciousness is ontic, it comes before the world. That is why we even see evidence of minds in
the world because the world is a vast mind that has its own agendas, goals, ends, and purposes at all scales. and in all places. and at all times.

A four-quadrant infographic titled "Networks" demonstrating the structural similarity of complex systems across different scales. The top-left panel shows a microscopic web of white, glowing biological neurons. The top-right panel displays a white-on-black map of road networks centered on Paris. The bottom-left panel shows a colorful, dense spherical visualization of the global internet's infrastructure. The bottom-right panel depicts the cosmic web of the universe, showing large-scale filaments of dark matter and galaxies in glowing orange and blue. The image highlights the recurring patterns of connectivity found in nature, technology, and the cosmos.
The same filamentous branching structures are the most efficient way to make 'physical' connections. They are evidence of minds, because we view them with our empirical a posteriori senses, this is their exterior. Presumably world mind has an a priori interior, the world soul, which is where these minds have corresponding interiors, which guide their purposes.

Doesn't this sound crazy? It's a different idea for sure. Think it through. Grapple with the consequences.
The following comparisons are from Sacred Geometry: Philosophy & Worldview.

The World in the Academy Model

The World has purpose precisely because it is minded. The world is full of recursive sub-minds, brimming with purposes. Although competition has a role, cooperation is the rule amongst world minds. Take biological cells for example. Single celled organisms may compete for limited food sources, while multi-cellular life requires massive cellular cooperation for the larger organism to survive. Minds at cross-purposes (for example those in competition) typically serve higher, evolutionary purposes.

The World in the Standard Model

The entire universe is utterly devoid of purpose, except to animals with complex brains. The laws of physics, chemistry, and biology have absolutely no purpose or teleology. Note: The insane levels of fine-tuning in these domains necessary to support life as we know it is explained away by referencing an infinite number of physical universes that were selected against by some unknown chooser in the unfalsifiable multiverse theory.

Evolution in the Academy Model

Structures like eyes evolve for the purpose of seeing. Evolution is irreducibly teleological because it is consciously guided by minds.
The universe was and is continually finely tuned to support maximum complexity and more interesting outcomes by minds at all levels, always using the universal language of the intelligible.

"There are mathematical rules that govern the way evolution works."
Arik Kershenbaum, author of The Zoologist’s Guide to the Galaxy (2021)

World and soul are co-equal dance partners, simultaneously driving evolution and involution. Evolution is the process by which soul minds drive world minds to adapt to changing conditions, resulting in structural changes in world minds. In the case of biology, invisible souls responsible for entire species drive their corresponding visible body forms to change.

Involution is the opposite process by which world minds drive soul minds to adapt to changing conditions, resulting in adaptation in soul minds. World and soul co-create our experience of this cosmic dance in our corresponding dissociated subminds deep within.

Life in the Academy Model

Edward Trifonov’s discovery of the core definition, "Life is self-reproduction with variations," aptly describes the nature of mind. Minds fit the underlying core definition of life, from universal mind down though all recursive dissociations. Each mind reproduces itself inside new dissociative boundaries which inform each new self, which will necessarily be varied in relationship to all other minds.
The upshot is that the universal, world, and soul minds (and all their recursive dissociations) are alive. Everything is alive and conscious—not just a few animals on planet Earth in some random solar system of a single galaxy.

Evolution in the Standard Model

The theory of Darwinian evolution posits that the history of biological life in the physical world is the history of genetic mutation arising solely by chance, with mutations conferring advantage conserved by natural selection—no teleology needed.

However, when teaching evolution, it is common to say evolution “made” eyes to sense the world, even though there is no actor named Evolution who made eyes according to its designs, goals, or purposes.

Personifying evolution is done simply for the practical purpose of facilitating human cognition, even though this is technically inaccurate. Some biologists consider teleological language highly problematic, but also unavoidable.

J. B. S. Haldane
(1892–1964)

"Teleology is like a mistress to a biologist: he cannot live without her but he's unwilling to be seen with her in public."

Life in the Standard Model

In 2011 Edward Trifonov, a Russian geneticist, reviewed 123 definitions of life. After linguistic analysis, all the definitions agreed on one thing, "Life is self-reproduction with variations." Of course, the unexamined assumption is that this definition applies only to biological life observed in the physical world.

Meaning in the Academy Model

The quest for meaning is a core human drive that motivates us all. Minds naturally seek meaning by trying to comprehend visible and/or invisible minds. Attempting to understand visible minds is the outer path of science. Attempting to understand invisible minds is the inner path of mysticism. Meaning cannot ever be completely spelled out in language. Meaning can only ever be understood by absolute consciousness, because consciousness is the meaning all its relative modulations are seeking and ultimately made of.

Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī
(1207 - 1273)

"You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop."

Meaning in the Standard Model

Religion, ethics, aesthetics, and morality arise from ascribing meaning—but these are all culturally relative pursuits. Some look to organized or disorganized systems of belief to ascribe meaning to their lives, behaviors, and value systems.

You will have to bring your own meaning to the party because meaning is not found in physics, chemistry, biology, or evolution, present company excepted.

Richard Dawkins
(1941–        )

"The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference."

The paths of the mystic (left) and scientist (right) are opposite ways of looking

Both paths of mystic and scientist are necessary, but neither is sufficient on its own. We act as the human bridge when we can see the partial truth in each perspective and synthesize our own way out of the prison of polarity. To grow up, we need mother and father energies, mater and pater (Latin), matter and pattern, Shiva and Shakti, just as we need Democrats and Republicans, collective order and individual freedom. Life isn't black and white but 50 billion shades of gray, drawing on the pure black and white polarities to mix our own unique and precious tonality on the spectrum of value.

The Zero Point: The Oculus of Purpose

The ultimate goal of this "interesting simulation" is to shift our identification from the moving parts of the map to the Oculus.
  • The Realization: The "Goal" of existence is to find the 'Zero Point' where the square of your worldly utility meets the circle of your divine essence.
  • The Shift: We move from being the "objects" of the universe's design to being the "witness" of its perfection. The Oculus is not a thing you see, but the light by which you see everything else. To live with purpose is to keep this aperture open to the "Eye of Heaven," accepting both the sun and the rain as necessary for the soul’s architectural integrity.

Evolution vs. Involution: The Co-Equal Dance

Evolution is not a series of random accidents; it is a consciously guided process.
  • Evolution: The process by which the Soul (the invisible) drives the World (the visible) to adapt and complexify.
  • Involution: The opposite process, where the World drives the Soul to adapt. Together, they perform a co-equal dance, finely tuning the universe to support maximum complexity and interesting, novel outcomes. A simulation is only worth running if it's interesting; the universe is no different."
An allegorical 17th-century style oil painting titled "The Dance of Evolution and Involution." Two personified figures are locked in a circular, rhythmic dance against a backdrop that transitions from a starry cosmic void to a lush primordial forest. On the left, a luminous, translucent figure representing the Soul (Involution) descends from a golden celestial light. On the right, a grounded, muscular figure representing the World (Evolution) rises from the earth. Their clasped hands create a central vortex of energy where complex forms, including DNA helices and nautilus shells, emerge as novel outcomes. The work features dramatic chiaroscuro, deep umber shadows, and a rich, museum-quality painterly texture.

The Generative Bridge: Procreation as Sacred Rebellion

The modern crisis of collapsing fertility—the dire "Total Fertility Rate" (TFR)—is a teleological crisis. It is a symptom of a civilization that has lost its sense of being The Human Bridge.
  • The Biological Oculus: To have a child is to build a new Oculus—a fresh aperture through which the Absolute can witness the Relative. If the purpose of life is the "unfolding flower of consciousness," then children are the next "octave" of that unfolding.
  • The Act of Rebellion: In a world of "Apathy: the modern fog of a war on cognition," the decision to bring life into the world is now the ultimate Sacred Anachronism.

The Universal Descent: A World Below Replacement

The demographic collapse is not a regional anomaly or a "Western" disease; it is a near-universal feature of the modern The Atomized Society. As of 2026, the data reveals a staggering convergence: over 90% of the world’s nations have experienced a downward trend in Total Fertility Rate (TFR) over the last decade. The "Replacement Level" of 2.1—the biological break-even point for a civilization—has transformed from a global standard into a distant memory (shown as a gray dashed line below).

The Dance of Evolution and Involution

Currently, regions covering 63% of the global population have fallen below replacement levels, a massive leap from just 45% at the turn of the millennium. Even traditional high-fertility zones are in freefall; Europe, for instance, saw TFR decreases in 24 of 27 EU countries in a single year (2022–2023). From the hyper-accelerated collapse in South Korea (the world’s lowest) to the sharp declines in China, India, and the United States, the trend lines are not merely dipping—they are crashing toward a terminal floor.

This universal descent suggests that the "Low Fertility Trap" is a systemic failure of the current civilizational model. When a culture’s TFR drops below 1.5, it enters a "demographic event horizon" from which no modern state has ever successfully returned to replacement levels. The Atomized Society has created a world where the biological cost of participation is the end of the lineage. We are witnessing a global "biological ghost story" in real-time, where the vast majority of the human family is choosing, or being conditioned, to simply fade away down to a crashing TFR of 0.5.

Do the Math

The sociological cause is ultimately secondary to the mathematical result. Starting with a population of 100 individuals (50 potential mothers), a 0.5 TFR yields a Net Female Reproduction Rate of approximately 0.237.

TFR (0.50) x Fraction of births that are girls (0.488) x Survival Rate (0.970) = 0.237

This means each generation is less than a quarter the size of the one preceding it. In three generations, the original 100 people contract to fewer than 2 survivors. Do not make this political please, this is deadly serious and will affects all of us.

For all practical purposes, a population that drops from 100 to 2 in three generations has hit a terminal wall. This is a catastrophe of a different order than plague or war. While those events destroy the living, they often leave the cultural software of the survivors intact, allowing for recovery. The 0.5 asymptote is different: it is a structural erasure of the future. It is not a pruning of the tree of life, but a systemic failure of the root system, ensuring that the civilization simply fades from the ledger of history.

The 0.5 asymptote is the mathematical proof that Complete Atomization—the elevation of the isolated individual as the sole unit of society—is a long-term impossibility. I'm quite concerned about this so I built a "Fertility-Rate Population Projection" calculator to simulate different scenarios.

The Blueprint Behind the Math

When you run these numbers, you aren't just playing with a sociological projection; you are witnessing the mathematical limits of a system that has lost its 'Invisible' anchor. The 0.5 asymptote is the point where the 'Visible' world simply runs out of the 'Invisible' purpose required to sustain it. This realization leads us to the ultimate 'Smoking Gun' of our existence: the Pre-established Harmony. The fact that three disparate maps—the Cosmos (Ontology), Knowledge (Epistemology), and Teleology (Purpose)—align with such mathematical and metaphysical precision proves that we aren't inventing meaning; we are clearing the dust off the floor of the Pantheon to reveal the pattern that was already there, reflected in the pavement by the light of the oculus.

The Unwitting Builders: Enacting Masterpieces in the Landscape

The original "Plan of the City of Washington" mirrors the mid-sagittal section of the human brain with a precision that defies simple explanation. However, to see this as a "conspiracy" of human actors is to miss the deeper truth. This is not L’Enfant’s intention or a Masonic plot; it is a Plan we likely enacted unknowingly, guided by a few core ideas about Baroque diagonals and the natural contours of the rivers.

Just as a bird does not "plan" the complex geometry of its nest, a nautilus does not "calculate" the logarithmic spiral of its shell, and tiny termite brains build but do not comprehend their incredible mound architecture—complete with natural air conditioning, structural buttressing, and internal farming—the human collective often acts unwittingly. When we are aligned with the "Pre-established Harmony," we sometimes enact the designs of higher minds onto the landscape, but rarer still is to become self-referentially aware of such things as we are doing now.

Beyond Conspiracy

Just because there is evidence of conscious design, it doesn't mean we should assume it always comes from human conspiracy. My worldview began in the realm of conspiracy years ago, but it evolved as I threw my net wider across domains like the macrocosm above and the microcosm below—realms where these patterns emerge but where humans have no scope to act.

If consciousness is the only wizard behind the curtain—rather than atoms, quarks, or dark energy—then it is naive to claim human credit for the totality of our creations. We are the hands, but the architect and the blueprints are inherent in the field. The comparison below suggests that the Federal Project was an unconscious attempt to govern the ship of state by mirroring the Tripartite Epistemology of the Mind in the three branches of government. They didn't just build a capital or a governmental structure; we unconsciously and fittingly projected a view of the human brain into a new seat of power, literally and figuratively.

I have collected and discovered dozens of these examples from many years spent researching Secrets in Plain Sight, and a decade following that writing the blog which became my Anthology and later manifested as Tangents (see non-fiction). Below are some "Secrets In Plain Sight" revealed my The Atlas Meridian (fiction that is a vehicle for truth).

The view from Versailles where the Sun King held court is axial in both directions. To the right it looks directly toward the Dome of the Rock, and to the left directly at the White House, all seats radiating power. The red lines trace these great circles below. This pattern relies on specific geomantic placement of all three sites, so this goes so far beyond conspiracy. The White House wasn't even built until a century after the Palace of Versailles' expansion and axis was finished.
Yet there it is, an axis of power curving around the world hidden in plain sight.

The Fractal Universe

The same laws that govern the birth of a star also govern the growth of a city or a human soul. Your internal experience is not an accident of biology, but a localized expression of a universal intelligible blueprint which is deeply based on geometry.

Consider the very iron that allows your blood to carry life-giving oxygen: that iron was not 'invented' by your body; it was forged in the crushing fusion cores of massive stars and scattered by their explosive deaths. It required the violent cataclysms of ancient supernovae to seed the interstellar clouds with heavy metals, which eventually coalesced into the crust of the Earth. Billions of years later, that same iron was harvested by your hemoglobin to chemically bind the breath of life. In the cold logic of astrophysics, iron is the 'cosmic ash' of a supernova's stellar forge—one of the most tightly bound nuclei in the universe, where the fusion of lighter elements finally hits a thermodynamic wall. Because the production of iron marks the exact point where a massive star can no longer gain energy from fusion and must instead surrender to gravity, its very existence in your veins is a physical receipt for multiple cosmic sacrifices. The iron on Earth's core and in your blood comes from multiple supernovae.

Meaning and Synchronicity: Signals from the Invisible

Meaning is the "gravity" of the soul. It is what motivates us to bridge the gap between the visible and the invisible.
  • The Outer Path: The Scientist | Artist attempting to understand visible minds (depending on preference for lateralization: left | right).
  • The Inner Path: The Philosopher | Mystic attempting to understand invisible minds (depending on preference for lateralization: left | right).
  • Synchronicity: These are the "signals" from the invisible world—meaningful coincidences that confirm when you are aligned with your true path.

The 33rd Order Graduation: The Call to Transcendence

  • The Invitation: By engaging with these "Sacred Anachronisms"—reading whole books, wrestling with hard ideas that take you out of your comfort zone, drawing geometry to unwind, and raising the next generation—you activate the teleological drive within yourself.
  • The Legacy: This geometry is etched into the very proportions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon. It is a silent, resonant archetype waiting to be remembered. You are the bridge between the wisdom of the ancients and a post-modern world in need of balance. Start acting like you have a sense of purpose, because you emphatically do!
Be the change you want to see in the world—become a lighthouse, shining your light in all directions without qualification. This is an archetype as old as the oldest standing obelisk in the world: the Temple of Ra in Heliopolis. Erected in the early 20th century BCE, it has stood as a silent sentinel for four millennia, marking the exact coordinate where the first 'Visible' rays of sunlight were memorialized in stone, birthing the obelisk form.

This geometry was never intended to be a monument to an infantile ego; it is a lithic symbol of the 'Invisible' illumination that resides within the 'Third Eye' of any Sovereign individual, regardless of their station. Throughout history, various autarchs styling themselves as 'Sun Kings' have looted these geomantic acupuncture needles, ferrying them across oceans to their own capitals in a vainglorious attempt to 'buy' the enlightenment of the Old Masters by accessorizing their regimes with the stolen artifacts of a more luminous age, when humans understood the connections between geometry, the pyramid, the sun, moon, and earth, and experienced deep Akashic connections to the soul of the world.

But you cannot kidnap a symbol, and you cannot monetize wisdom. While they obsessed over shifting the Visible immense weights of granite, they remained blind to the Invisible alignment it represents to those in resonance with the Lidless Eye of the Sun—eternally radiating its Truth to a universe that does not require a transactional benefit to catalyze action. When you align with this Great Circle, you stop being an ossified pharaoh of past glory and heed the alchemical imperative to emit your the inner light of wisdom.
A graphic titled "ALL THREE STRUCTURES FORM A GREAT CIRCLE ALIGNMENT" featuring three architectural landmarks. On the left is the George Washington National Masonic Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia, noted for its 333 ft. height. In the center is a historical drawing of the site of the original Lighthouse of Alexandria, Egypt, labeled "Pharia Isis." On the right is the Temple of Ra Obelisk in Heliopolis, Egypt, standing in its original location. The image illustrates a geographic and symbolic connection between these three monumental structures across time and space.
